Bulk 5W-30 Motor Oil: A Specification Guide
5W-30 is a viscosity grade, not a complete motor-oil specification. Before buying it in cases, pails, drums, totes, or metered bulk, identify whether the application requires a gasoline API/ILSAC oil, a European ACEA or OEM-specific oil, a heavy-duty diesel product, or another documented formulation.
Products can share the same 5W-30 viscosity and still serve different engines. Do not consolidate them until every application is checked against current product evidence.
What does 5W-30 tell you?
SAE 5W-30 identifies the oil’s viscosity grade under the SAE J300 classification system. The first part addresses low-temperature cranking and pumping limits; the “30” grade addresses high-temperature viscosity ranges.
It does not, by itself, tell you:
- gasoline or diesel application;
- API or ILSAC performance category;
- ACEA sequence;
- OEM approval;
- emissions-system compatibility;
- base-oil type;
- drain interval;
- package size;
- suitability for a particular engine.
The engine manufacturer’s manual or service system supplies those requirements.
What are the main 5W-30 product families?
Separate 5W-30 demand into technically meaningful groups.
| 5W-30 family | Typical evidence | Main buying question |
|---|---|---|
| North American gasoline | API SQ or earlier allowed category; ILSAC GF-7A or earlier allowed standard | Which current category and OEM requirement does the engine specify? |
| European light-vehicle | ACEA sequence plus BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Porsche, Renault, or other OEM requirement | Is formal approval required, or is a manufacturer recommendation acceptable? |
| Light diesel | API, ACEA, and OEM requirements vary by engine and aftertreatment | Does the oil’s SAPS profile and approval set match the engine? |
| Heavy-duty diesel | API CK-4 or another engine-maker requirement, sometimes ACEA E categories | Is the 5W-30 approved for the engine and duty cycle? |
| Specialty or mixed-fleet | Product-specific coverage | Which applications are explicitly included and excluded? |
Do not place these families in one tank because the containers all say 5W-30.
What are API SQ and ILSAC GF-7A?
API SQ and ILSAC GF-7A are current gasoline-engine oil performance categories introduced in March 2025. API’s current motor-oil guide describes protection areas that include aged-oil low-speed pre-ignition, timing-chain wear, high-temperature deposits, sludge and varnish, fuel economy, emissions-system protection, and low-temperature pumpability.1
API SQ with Resource Conserving corresponds to ILSAC GF-7A. Older API SP and ILSAC GF-6A oils remain relevant where the vehicle manufacturer allows them.1
Do not assume that every current vehicle automatically calls for API SQ/GF-7A. Follow the owner’s manual and any updated OEM service information. Where an API quality mark is claimed, verify the exact product in the API EOLCS directory.2
Why is European 5W-30 different?
European applications often add an ACEA sequence and a vehicle-manufacturer specification. A 5W-30 may be designed around ACEA C2, C3, or another sequence and may list BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Porsche, or other requirements.
The OEM requirement can control:
- high-temperature high-shear viscosity;
- sulfated ash, phosphorus, and sulfur limits;
- emissions-system compatibility;
- oxidation and deposit performance;
- fuel-economy performance;
- approved drain regime;
- engine-test requirements.
Do not treat ACEA C2, C3, and C4 as a simple good-better-best ladder. They describe different performance and chemical limits.
Can a 5W-30 also be a heavy-duty diesel oil?
Yes. Heavy-duty diesel oils can use SAE 5W-30 while carrying API CK-4, ACEA E, or engine-maker requirements. They are not automatically interchangeable with passenger-car 5W-30.
API states that CK-4 oils are intended for applicable high-speed four-stroke diesel engines and that FA-4 oils are not interchangeable or backward compatible with CK-4.3 A fleet must confirm the engine maker’s approved category and viscosity.
MANNOL TS-17 UHPD 5W-30 Blue, reference MN7117, is one current Inforca example. MANNOL’s current page lists SAE 5W-30, API CK-4, ACEA E8/E11, and a set of manufacturer specifications, with a formal Daimler DTFR 15C110 approval.4 It is a heavy-duty product, not a default substitute for passenger-car 5W-30.
Which light-vehicle 5W-30 options are relevant in the Inforca portfolio?
Inforca’s current MANNOL and PureGuard pages show several 5W-30 roles.56
PureGuard Full Synthetic SAE 5W-30
PureGuard’s current manufacturer page presents Full Synthetic SAE 5W-30 as API SQ / ILSAC GF-7A.7 Inforca’s current PureGuard page still displays API SP / ILSAC GF-6A for its 5W-30 full-synthetic listing.6
Because the manufacturer and distributor pages reflect different category generations, confirm the exact label, SKU, API license, and TDS supplied for the order. Do not publish or purchase against a blended claim.
PureGuard Synthetic Blend SAE 5W-30
PureGuard’s current manufacturer catalog includes a synthetic-blend SAE 5W-30 in the API SQ / GF-7A generation.8 The Inforca page displays an earlier API SP / GF-6A description.6
Confirm which version Inforca currently supplies, its license status, package sizes, and availability.
MANNOL Energy Premium 5W-30
MANNOL’s current product page identifies Energy Premium 5W-30, reference 7908, as API SP Resource Conserving and designed for gasoline and diesel light-vehicle applications where ACEA C3 is required.9 The supplied 2026 product document also lists ACEA C2/C3 and several OEM specifications, with 1 L, 5 L, and 20 L presentations.
Confirm the current TDS and the exact approval or recommendation language for the vehicle. The presence of multiple specifications does not make the product universal.
MANNOL Energy 5W-30
Inforca lists MANNOL Energy 5W-30 API SN/CH-4 in its active light-vehicle range.5 Use the current product data and engine requirement to determine where that older category combination fits; do not substitute it automatically for an API SQ/GF-7A or ACEA C3 requirement.
Which products have documented commercial-size options?
Commercial packaging varies by exact SKU and market. Current manufacturer or supplied product documents show:
| Product | Documented examples | Confirmation needed |
|---|---|---|
| MANNOL TS-17 UHPD 5W-30 Blue, MN7117 | MANNOL currently lists 5 L, 20 L, 60 L, 208 L, and 1,000 L formats | Inforca stock, order status, and exact application |
| MANNOL Energy Premium 5W-30, MN7908 | Supplied 2026 file lists 1 L, 5 L, and 20 L | Current TDS, stock, and order quantity |
| PureGuard Full Synthetic SAE 5W-30 | Manufacturer shows the current product family | Inforca SKU, license generation, and larger-format availability |
| PureGuard Synthetic Blend SAE 5W-30 | Manufacturer shows the current product family | Inforca SKU, license generation, and larger-format availability |
A manufacturer’s available package does not prove that Inforca stocks it. Ask for a dated presentation and availability confirmation.
How should a shop decide what 5W-30 to buy in bulk?
Build a 5W-30 application matrix from work orders.
For each engine, list:
- Year, make, model, and engine.
- Required SAE grade.
- API and ILSAC category.
- ACEA sequence.
- OEM specification or approval.
- Oil volume per service.
- Monthly service count.
- Product currently used.
Group applications only when one exact product’s current documentation covers every requirement. Keep other products packaged and separate.
How should a fleet decide whether 5W-30 belongs in a drum or tote?
Confirm that one exact 5W-30 has stable demand across approved engines. Then compare turnover, lead time, storage, dispensing equipment, residual product, and contamination controls.
For mixed light- and heavy-duty fleets, do not combine gasoline, European, and CK-4 5W-30 volumes. They may require different products despite sharing the viscosity.
Set a reorder point from expected use during the confirmed lead time plus an approved safety quantity. Recalculate after fleet, route, or service-interval changes.
What should a 5W-30 quote state?
Require:
- exact product and SKU;
- API, ILSAC, ACEA, and OEM claims;
- claim type: licensed, approved, meets, or recommended;
- current TDS and SDS;
- API directory evidence when applicable;
- package and quantity;
- stocked, orderable, or special-order status;
- delivery location and lead time;
- quote issue and expiration dates;
- substitution procedure.
Reject a quote that states only “bulk 5W-30.”
Frequently asked questions about bulk 5W-30
Is all 5W-30 motor oil the same?
No. Products can differ by API, ILSAC, ACEA, OEM approvals, formulation, and intended engine type.
Can one 5W-30 cover gasoline and diesel engines?
Some products carry claims for both, but coverage is product- and engine-specific. Verify every application.
Is API SQ backward compatible with API SP?
API states that the latest gasoline category includes the performance properties of earlier categories.1 The vehicle’s viscosity and OEM requirements still apply.
Can I use CK-4 5W-30 in a gasoline car?
Not from viscosity and CK-4 alone. Use a product only when its current data and the vehicle manufacturer support the gasoline application.
Does Inforca sell 5W-30 in drums or totes?
Some MANNOL 5W-30 products have documented commercial sizes, but exact Inforca stock and package availability must be confirmed. Send the product requirement and monthly volume.
Identify the 5W-30 family before requesting bulk
Send Inforca the vehicles or engines, API/ILSAC/ACEA/OEM requirements, monthly use by application, current products, desired formats, and delivery ZIP code. The team can separate gasoline, European, and heavy-duty 5W-30 needs and confirm current MANNOL or PureGuard options.
