How Much Does a 55-Gallon Drum of Oil Cost?

Warehouse employee in gloves inspecting the seal and label on top of a MANNOL 208-liter drum against a clipboard checklist

There is no reliable universal price for a 55-gallon drum of oil. The quote depends on the exact lubricant, specification, nominal container volume, order quantity, delivery location, freight, drum terms, dispensing equipment, and effective date.

Request a dated quote for a defined SKU. An online price for “motor oil drum” cannot be applied to another viscosity, brand, performance category, or destination.

Is a 55-gallon drum the same as a 208-liter drum?

They are close commercial descriptions, but confirm the labeled quantity. Fifty-five U.S. gallons is approximately 208.2 liters, and many lubricant manufacturers publish a nominal 208-liter drum.

Do not calculate the order from the nickname alone. Use the product’s stated net contents and the supplier’s delivered quantity.

The container may also be described as:

  • 55-gallon drum;
  • 208-liter drum;
  • 200-liter drum;
  • barrel, in informal sales language.

Those terms are not automatically equal. The quote and product label control.

Which product details change the drum price?

Different lubricants have different formulations, specifications, approvals, and supply conditions.

Identify:

  • brand and exact product name;
  • manufacturer SKU;
  • SAE viscosity or ISO/NLGI grade;
  • API, ILSAC, ACEA, or OEM requirement;
  • gasoline, diesel, transmission, hydraulic, gear, or other application;
  • synthetic, synthetic-blend, or other product description;
  • current TDS and SDS;
  • license or approval evidence.

A drum of API CK-4 15W-40, a European ACEA C3 5W-30, an AW ISO 46 hydraulic oil, and an automatic-transmission fluid are not comparable offers.

How does the specification affect the quote?

The buyer must first select a technically suitable product. The American Petroleum Institute advises users to follow the vehicle manufacturer’s oil recommendation.1

Where API marks are claimed, verify the exact product, viscosity, and category in API’s EOLCS directory.2 For European or manufacturer-specific applications, verify the required ACEA sequence and OEM approval or recommendation.

Do not accept a lower drum price for a product that lacks the necessary coverage. Viscosity alone does not establish equivalence.

Which logistics charges can change the total?

A drum is a freight and handling unit. The destination and receiving process affect the final quote.

Ask whether the price includes:

  • freight;
  • fuel or delivery surcharge;
  • liftgate service;
  • delivery appointment;
  • limited-access location;
  • inside placement;
  • pallet or drum handling;
  • residential or commercial destination conditions;
  • taxes;
  • drum deposit or recovery.

Provide the delivery ZIP code, dock or forklift status, access hours, and contact. A pickup price should not be compared directly with a delivered price.

What dispensing equipment does a drum require?

A drum normally requires equipment to move and dispense the lubricant safely and cleanly. The correct setup depends on viscosity, product, flow, measurement, and shop layout.

Possible items include:

  • drum dolly, pallet, rack, or cradle;
  • hand, pneumatic, or electric pump;
  • bung adapter;
  • hose and nozzle;
  • meter;
  • filter or breather;
  • drip tray or secondary containment;
  • lock or access control.

Confirm whether equipment is purchased, leased, loaned, deposited, or supplied under a volume agreement. Include installation and maintenance.

Inforca is adding MATO pumps, grease guns, and dispensing equipment, but its current site says the active model list is being finalized.3 Send the product, container, flow, service point, and current method for model confirmation.

How much usable oil comes out of a drum?

The labeled quantity is not always identical to the amount easily dispensed. Pump pickup, drum position, viscosity, temperature, transfer method, and handling can leave residual product.

Measure residual oil during normal operation. Do not assume perfect recovery in the cost comparison.

Also record:

  • spills and drips;
  • unmetered dispensing;
  • damaged containers;
  • product transferred during drum changes;
  • inventory adjustment.

The usable quantity matters more than nominal volume when comparing formats.

Is a drum cheaper than cases or pails?

It can be, but only when demand is stable and the facility can use the oil before it becomes slow inventory. Compare the full process.

FactorCases or pailsDrum
PackagingMore individual containersOne large container
HandlingMore openings and unitsDrum movement and pump setup
FlexibilityEasier for low-volume productsBetter for one repeat-use product

DispensingPour, spout, or pail pumpPump, hose, or meter
Residual oilSpread across packagesConcentrated in one container
MisapplicationPackage label follows productTank/dispenser labels must be controlled

The drum is a poor purchase when the SKU moves slowly, the service mix changes, or the shop cannot dedicate clean equipment.

What should a drum quote include?

Require these fields:

  1. Exact product and SKU.
  2. Net contents.
  3. Viscosity and performance claims.
  4. TDS and SDS.
  5. Quantity of drums.
  6. Stocked, orderable, or special-order status.
  7. Minimum order.
  8. Pickup or delivery terms.
  9. Destination and freight.
  10. Drum ownership, deposit, return, or disposal.
  11. Equipment included or required.
  12. Payment terms.
  13. Quote issue and expiration dates.
  14. Damage, shortage, and substitution procedure.

A one-line drum price is not a complete commercial comparison.

Which Inforca products have documented 208-liter presentations?

The supplied 2026 product files include several active MANNOL products with 208-liter presentations. Examples include:

  • MANNOL TS-14 UHPD SAE 15W-40 API CK-4, MN7114;
  • MANNOL TS-17 UHPD SAE 5W-30 API CK-4, MN7117;
  • MANNOL TS-18 SAE 15W-40 API CK-4, MN7128;
  • MANNOL Automatic Plus ATF Dexron III, MN8206.

Inforca’s current MANNOL page lists those engine-oil and transmission families as active portfolio examples.4 The documented presentation does not prove current stock, price, or suitability for a particular engine or transmission.

PureGuard also serves high-volume engine-oil, heavy-duty, hydraulic, and transmission programs in Inforca’s portfolio.5 Confirm drum or other commercial sizes by exact SKU because the supplied PureGuard files do not contain a complete package matrix.

How should a shop or fleet decide whether to buy a drum?

Use a short gate:

  • Does the exact product meet the application?
  • Is monthly demand predictable?
  • Will the drum turn within the organization’s inventory target?
  • Can the site receive and move it?
  • Is dedicated dispensing available?
  • Is the product protected from mixing and contamination?
  • Does the supplier’s minimum fit normal demand?
  • Is the delivered-and-handled cost favorable to smaller formats?

If one answer is unknown, obtain it before converting the SKU.

Frequently asked questions about drum oil cost

Why don’t drum prices stay the same?

Product, freight, packaging, availability, quantity, destination, and commercial terms change. Use a dated quote.

Does a drum include a pump?

Not automatically. Confirm equipment and connections in the quote.

Can I return an empty drum?

Terms vary. Determine ownership, deposit, cleaning, return, or disposal before ordering.

Can I store a drum outside?

Follow manufacturer, fire-code, environmental, insurance, and facility requirements. Outdoor exposure can increase water, temperature, corrosion, and labeling risks.

Does Inforca publish 55-gallon drum prices?

The current website uses a quote process and does not publish a universal drum-price table.6
