What Is DEXRON-VI Transmission Fluid?
DEXRON-VI is an automatic-transmission-fluid specification developed by General Motors. It is used where the vehicle or equipment manufacturer requires DEXRON-VI; it is not a generic term for red ATF or every low-viscosity transmission fluid.
Confirm the exact transmission and manual requirement. Do not use DEXRON-VI in a CVT, DCT, MERCON ULV application, or other specialized unit unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.
What does DEXRON-VI fluid do?
In a compatible automatic transmission, DEXRON-VI fluid must:
- carry hydraulic pressure;
- control clutch friction;
- transfer torque in the converter;
- lubricate gears, bearings, and bushings;
- carry heat;
- resist oxidation, deposits, aeration, and foam;
- work with specified seals and friction materials.
GM owner information identifies DEXRON-VI for automatic and, in selected vehicles, manual transmissions.1 That does not authorize it for a different model or component.
Is DEXRON-VI a viscosity grade?
DEXRON-VI is not a viscosity grade. It is a fluid performance specification. Viscosity is one element, but the specification also addresses friction, oxidation, aeration, material compatibility, and transmission durability.
Comparing only kinematic viscosity cannot establish equivalence between two ATFs.
Does DEXRON-VI replace DEXRON-III?
GM or product guidance often allows DEXRON-VI in selected older GM applications, but do not apply that as a universal rule to every transmission, power-steering system, hydraulic unit, or non-GM application that once used a DEXRON-III-style fluid.
Confirm the component maker’s supersession notice and the exact product’s coverage.
Is DEXRON-VI the same as MERCON LV or ULV?
DEXRON-VI is not the same as MERCON LV or ULV. They are separate specification families. A multi-vehicle ATF may list more than one, but that coverage must appear in the current TDS and be acceptable to the transmission maker.
Ford specifies that units requiring MERCON ULV use only that fluid and warns that another fluid can cause damage.2 Similar names or viscosity do not create interchangeability.
Can DEXRON-VI be used in a CVT?
DEXRON-VI should not be used in a CVT by default. A CVT requires the exact CVT fluid specified for its belt, chain, pulley, hydraulic, and friction design. A conventional DEXRON-VI ATF is not a substitute.
Can it be used as power-steering fluid?
Only where the vehicle manual specifies DEXRON-VI for the steering system. Some platforms use ATF in power steering; others require a dedicated fluid or electric steering has no hydraulic fluid at all.
Which Inforca ATFs list DEXRON-VI?
Two Inforca fluids list DEXRON-VI:
- MANNOL Dexron VI is a synthetic ATF that lists DEXRON-VI. Its data sheet also lists earlier DEXRON grades.
- PureGuard Full Synthetic Global ATF lists DEXRON-VI, MERCON V/LV, and ATF+4.
For equipment that calls for an earlier DEXRON grade, Inforca also lists MANNOL Automatic Plus ATF Dexron III and PureGuard Multi-Purpose ATF. Do not choose either as a DEXRON-VI replacement unless the vehicle or component manufacturer allows it.
Coverage is stated on each product’s technical data sheet. Match it to the vehicle’s required specification before ordering.
How should a shop verify DEXRON-VI?
- Identify the vehicle and transmission code.
- Read the current OEM specification.
- Match the exact product and TDS.
- Confirm approval, license, or recommendation status.
- Follow the temperature and level-setting procedure.
- Use the service-fill quantity, not dry capacity alone.
- Diagnose leaks or shift complaints separately.
Fluid color cannot prove identity, condition, or compatibility.
Frequently asked questions
Are DEXRON 6 and DEXRON-VI the same?
“DEXRON 6” is an informal way of referring to DEXRON-VI.
Is every synthetic ATF DEXRON-VI?
Not every synthetic ATF is DEXRON-VI; “synthetic” does not establish a specification.
Can DEXRON-III and DEXRON-VI be mixed?
Do not decide from the names. Confirm the transmission manufacturer’s supersession guidance and service procedure.
Does DEXRON-VI fit every GM transmission?
DEXRON-VI does not fit every GM transmission; GM has used multiple transmission designs and fluid specifications.
Will DEXRON-VI stop a transmission leak?
Correct fluid does not repair a failed seal, line, pan, or case.
