Best CK-4 15W-40 Oil for an Older Duramax

Two mechanics at a bus depot reviewing a repair checklist on a clipboard beside a diesel engine bay, with a row of transit buses staged behind them

The best choice is an API-licensed CK-4 SAE 15W-40 that satisfies the current GM guidance for the exact Duramax model year and performs well in that engine’s condition and duty. There is no universal best brand for every older Duramax.

What did older manuals require?

A 2015 GM Duramax supplement specifies API CJ-4 and SAE 15W-40 above −18°C/0°F, with 5W-40 for colder starts.1 Earlier and later Duramax engines may differ, so obtain the manual for the VIN.

API states that CK-4 exceeds CJ-4 performance criteria and can lubricate engines calling for CJ-4.2 That supports CK-4 as a modern category replacement where the viscosity and GM guidance match.

What should an owner verify?

  1. Model year, VIN, and engine code.
  2. Current GM oil specification.
  3. SAE grade for expected temperature.
  4. API Donut and license directory.
  5. DPF and emissions configuration.
  6. Oil pressure, leaks, consumption, and service history.
  7. Duty: towing, idle, short trips, or sustained highway.
  8. Normal or severe interval.

Does high mileage require thicker oil?

Not automatically. Low pressure or consumption requires diagnosis. Moving outside the specified viscosity can affect cold flow, variable systems, turbo lubrication, and fuel use.

Use GM’s permitted grades unless an engine professional documents another need.

Which Inforca 15W-40 products are candidates?

ProductSupplied documentationVerification needed
MANNOL TS-14 UHPD, MN7114SAE 15W-40, API CK-4, ACEA E11/E7, multiple heavy-duty OEM approvalsAPI license for exact product and GM/Ford-specific fit if required
MANNOL TS-18Active 15W-40 CK-4 listingCurrent TDS, approval matrix, package
PureGuard PG206SAE 15W-40 synthetic blend, API CK-4/SN in supplied sheetAPI license and full OEM coverage

These are qualified candidates, not blanket Duramax recommendations. Inforca should confirm the current label and documentation.3

Synthetic blend or full synthetic?

For Florida temperatures, a compliant 15W-40 can be appropriate where GM permits it. Full synthetic may help for cold starts or high thermal stress, but it does not replace CK-4/CJ-4 coverage.

If the manual calls for 5W-40 below a temperature threshold, follow it.

How should two oils be compared?

Compare license, GM requirement, viscosity, TDS, consumption, oil pressure, used-oil trend, availability, package, and delivered cost. Start a new product at the normal interval.

Frequently asked questions

Can CK-4 replace CJ-4 in a Duramax?

API says CK-4 exceeds CJ-4; confirm the exact GM manual and viscosity.2

Is 15W-40 correct year-round in Florida?

Often for manuals with the same temperature chart, but check the specific model year and travel conditions.

Will CK-4 harm a DPF?

CK-4 is designed for aftertreatment-equipped engines, but the exact product and engine requirements must match.

Is more expensive oil always better?

No. Documentation and measured performance matter.

Can oil cure injector or turbo problems?

No. Diagnose mechanical and fuel-system faults.
