BMW LL-04 vs. MB 229.51 vs. VW 507.00
BMW Longlife-04, Mercedes-Benz 229.51, and Volkswagen 507.00 are separate manufacturer engine-oil specifications. Some oils carry all three, but that overlap does not make the standards interchangeable.
Use the specification and viscosity required for the exact vehicle, engine, model year, and market. Then verify the exact oil’s approval or documented coverage.
What does each specification cover?
| Specification | Issuer | High-level application | Primary verification source |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMW Longlife-04 | BMW | Selected BMW gasoline or diesel engines, often with aftertreatment and long-life service requirements | VIN-specific BMW owner/service information and current approval list |
| MB 229.51 | Mercedes-Benz | Selected Mercedes-Benz engines requiring an aftertreatment-compatible oil | Mercedes-Benz operating-fluid sheet and engine-specific instructions |
| VW 507.00 | Volkswagen Group | Selected VW Group diesel engines, including many DPF applications | Vehicle manual, engine code, and current VW approved-oil information |
These summaries are not application approvals. Each manufacturer has other oil standards, and the correct one can vary by market.
Where do these specifications overlap?
They often overlap around European aftertreatment-compatible oils, commonly in the ACEA C3 category. ACEA C3 sets limits including high-temperature/high-shear viscosity of at least 3.5 mPa·s and sulfated ash no greater than 0.8%.1
The OEM standards add manufacturer-specific requirements beyond an ACEA category. Therefore:
- ACEA C3 does not automatically prove BMW LL-04;
- BMW LL-04 does not automatically prove MB 229.51;
- MB 229.51 does not automatically prove VW 507.00;
- VW 507.00 does not automatically prove either of the other two.
Why can one oil list all three?
A single formulation can be tested or positioned against multiple requirements. MANNOL’s current page for Longlife 504/507 5W-30 lists ACEA C3, BMW Longlife-04, MB 229.51, and formal Volkswagen 504.00/507.00 approvals.2
That example shows multiple coverage is possible. It does not establish that every C3 oil has the same status — or that the example product is currently stocked by Inforca.
Approval vs. recommendation: what should the label say?
Read the wording carefully.
- Approved normally indicates a formal OEM approval for the named product.
- Meets is generally a performance claim made by the lubricant marketer.
- Recommended for is the lubricant manufacturer’s use recommendation.
If a warranty, customer contract, or OEM instruction requires formal approval, a broad recommendation is not equivalent. Match the product name, viscosity, and data-sheet version to the approval evidence.
Can VW 507.00 oil be used in a BMW LL-04 application?
Only if that exact oil also has the BMW Longlife-04 coverage required for that BMW. VW 507.00 alone is not enough.
Likewise, an LL-04 oil can be used in a Mercedes-Benz or Volkswagen application only when the same product also carries the required Mercedes-Benz or VW specification.
Does 5W-30 make the oils equivalent?
No. SAE 5W-30 is a viscosity grade. It does not define the ACEA category, chemical limits, engine tests, OEM approvals, or drain interval.
Volkswagen’s approved-oil bulletin includes both 0W-30 and 5W-30 products under 50400/50700.3 The standard and viscosity must be checked separately.
How should a shop verify the correct Euro oil?
- Capture the VIN, model year, engine, and market.
- Find the oil specification in current OEM information.
- Record allowed viscosity grades.
- Check aftertreatment equipment and service schedule.
- Identify the exact oil, SKU, and current TDS.
- Distinguish approval from recommendation.
- Verify the approval in the OEM’s current list when required.
- Record the decision in the work order or fluid matrix.
BMW provides VIN-based digital owner manuals.4 Mercedes-Benz directs users to its operating-fluids system.5 A generic web lookup is not a substitute for those vehicle-specific sources.
Which current MANNOL products are relevant?
Inforca currently lists MANNOL Energy Premium 5W-30, Energy Formula PD 5W-40, and Formula Excel 5W-40 among its active light-vehicle oils.6 The supplied manufacturer sheets list differing combinations of ACEA C3 and BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen coverage.
Before recommending any one of them, verify:
- exact engine requirement;
- viscosity;
- current sheet and product reference;
- whether each OEM statement is an approval, specification claim, or recommendation;
- current Inforca availability.
MANNOL Longlife 504/507 5W-30 is not in Inforca’s public active-product list or supplied product Markdown. It should not be represented as stocked without confirmation.
Frequently asked questions
Is BMW LL-04 the same as ACEA C3?
No. C3 is an ACEA category; LL-04 is a BMW requirement.
Is MB 229.51 correct for every Mercedes-Benz diesel?
No. Mercedes-Benz uses multiple operating-fluid sheets. Identify the engine and current requirement.
Is VW 507.00 only for diesel engines?
It is generally associated with selected VW Group diesel applications. Many oils pair it with VW 504.00 for selected gasoline engines.
Can I choose an oil because it says “European formula”?
No. That is positioning language, not an OEM specification.
Do all three specifications allow the same interval?
No. The vehicle’s maintenance system and current service schedule set the interval.
