Can Modern CK-4 Oil Replace Old API CC or CD Oil?
Often, a modern API CK-4 oil can protect an older four-stroke diesel that originally required API CC or CD, but the substitution is not automatic. Check engine cycle, viscosity, monograde requirement, fuel sulfur, seals, oil consumption, and current engine-manufacturer guidance.
API CC and CD are obsolete and unsuitable for modern engines. Their age makes current OEM guidance more valuable than the original category alone.1
What does API say about old diesel categories?
API lists:
- CC as obsolete and unsuitable for most diesel engines built after 1990;
- CD as obsolete and unsuitable for most diesel engines built after 1994;
- CK-4 as exceeding performance criteria of CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, and CH-4.
API also states that diesel backward compatibility is usually — but not always — available. Older equipment and two-stroke diesels can require exceptions.1
Why isn’t CK-4 automatically correct?
The old manual may also require:
- SAE 30 or SAE 40 monograde oil;
- a specific viscosity for ambient temperature;
- a high-sulfur-fuel interval;
- a two-stroke diesel formulation;
- a military, OEM, or equipment specification;
- compatibility with older seals or oil-consumption behavior.
CK-4 identifies performance category, not the correct viscosity or every legacy application.
What if the tractor is a two-stroke diesel?
Stop and obtain engine-specific guidance. API notes that two-stroke-cycle diesel engines can have different lubrication requirements and that older equipment may still require CF or other specialized oil.1
A four-stroke CK-4 recommendation should not be extended to a two-stroke Detroit Diesel or other legacy design without approval.
What about high-sulfur diesel fuel?
CK-4 oils are formulated for fuel sulfur up to 500 ppm, but API warns that sulfur above 15 ppm can affect aftertreatment durability or drain interval.1
Legacy off-road operations or export markets may use different fuel. Confirm sulfur and shorten intervals if the engine maker requires it.
Can a multigrade replace monograde oil?
Only if the engine manufacturer permits it. A 15W-40 can offer broader temperature performance, but an old engine may have specific bearing, consumption, start, or ambient-temperature instructions.
Do not assume viscosity equivalence from the hot-grade number alone.
Which Inforca CK-4 products may be screened?
Inforca’s current heavy-duty portfolio includes:2
- MANNOL TS-14 UHPD 15W-40, MN7114;
- MANNOL TS-17 UHPD 5W-30, MN7117;
- MANNOL TS-18 15W-40;
- MANNOL TS-16 UHPD 5W-40;
- PureGuard PG206 15W-40 synthetic blend.
These are candidates only when viscosity and engine guidance match. The supplied TS-14 file lists CK-4 and several current heavy-duty OEM approvals; it does not prove suitability for every legacy tractor.
How should the substitution be evaluated?
- Identify engine make, model, serial, and cycle.
- Find a current service bulletin or dealer recommendation.
- Confirm original API and OEM requirements.
- Confirm allowed viscosity and ambient range.
- Identify fuel sulfur.
- Review seals, leaks, deposits, and consumption.
- Start with the normal interval.
- Monitor pressure, consumption, and used oil.
Frequently asked questions
Is API CD oil still available?
Some products may still use legacy claims, but API classifies CD as obsolete.
Is CK-4 always backward compatible?
It explicitly exceeds several prior categories, but not every historical engine/application. Check OEM guidance.
Can FA-4 replace CC or CD?
Do not assume so. FA-4 is not backward compatible with CK-4 or earlier C categories.
Will detergent in modern oil loosen deposits?
Deposit behavior depends on engine condition and formulation. Inspect and monitor rather than relying on a blanket myth.
Should an old tractor use 15W-40?
Only if the engine’s viscosity guidance allows it for the ambient temperature.
Send the engine serial and original manual page
Send Inforca the tractor and engine model/serial, a photo of the lubricant requirement, operating temperature, fuel sulfur if known, current oil, consumption, capacity, and package size. The team can screen current CK-4 products and identify exceptions.
