Transmission Fluid Service

How Often Should Automatic Transmission Fluid Be Changed?

Change ATF at the mileage, time, or operating interval specified for the exact vehicle and transmission. There is no universal 30,000-, 60,000-, or 100,000-mile rule. Severe service, towing, heat, stop-and-go use, and commercial duty can shorten the schedule.

Where is the interval found?

Use the VIN-specific owner manual, maintenance schedule, and current service bulletins. Confirm whether the interval applies to normal or severe service and whether a filter is included.

ZF states that transmission oil experiences normal wear and publishes transmission-specific lubricant and service information.1

What counts as severe service?

Depending on the manufacturer:

  • frequent towing or heavy loads;
  • commercial delivery or taxi work;
  • high ambient temperature;
  • repeated stop-and-go driving;
  • mountain operation;
  • extensive idling;
  • water, dust, or contamination exposure.

Use the vehicle’s definition, not a generic list.

What if the manual says lifetime fluid?

“Lifetime” is manufacturer- and application-specific. Check whether the schedule changes for severe service, repairs, leaks, overheating, or age. Do not interpret it as a guarantee that fluid never degrades.

Drain-and-fill or flush?

Follow the transmission maker’s procedure. A drain-and-fill replaces part of the fluid; pan service may include a filter; an exchange uses equipment. A generic power flush is not correct for every unit.

Which fluid should be used?

The exact OEM specification. Inforca carries MANNOL and PureGuard ATF/CVT products, but the transmission code must be matched before selecting one.2

Frequently asked questions

Should I change ATF if it looks clean?

Appearance does not replace the schedule.

Does synthetic ATF last forever?

No.

Should I service sooner after towing?

Use the severe-service schedule if your manual classifies the duty that way.

Can old fluid be tested?

Condition analysis may help fleets, but it does not automatically replace OEM limits.

What if service history is unknown?

Inspect, identify the unit and fluid, diagnose symptoms, and choose a conservative professional procedure.
