Transmission Fluid Service

What Is Transmission Fluid and What Does It Do?

Transmission fluid is a lubricant engineered for a vehicle or equipment transmission. Depending on the design, it lubricates gears and bearings, carries heat, operates hydraulic controls, manages clutch friction, and transfers torque.

There is no single fluid for every transmission. Conventional automatics, CVTs, DCTs, manual gearboxes, and heavy-duty powershift units can require different chemistry and viscosity.

What are the main transmission-fluid families?

Transmission typeCommon fluid familyMain selection point
Conventional automaticATFOEM friction and viscosity specification
Continuously variable transmissionCVT fluidExact belt/chain CVT requirement
Dual-clutch transmissionDCT fluid or design-specific fluidWet versus dry clutch and OEM specification
Manual transmissionMTF, gear oil, or sometimes ATFSynchronizer, gear, and viscosity requirements
Heavy-duty powershiftPowershift transmission fluidEquipment approval and duty cycle

The component name is not enough. One manual transmission may use ATF while another uses a dedicated MTF or gear oil.

What does it do in an automatic transmission?

ATF can work as:

  • hydraulic medium for valves and clutch circuits;
  • torque-transfer fluid in a torque converter;
  • friction-control fluid for wet clutches and lock-up elements;
  • lubricant for gears, bearings, and bushings;
  • heat-transfer medium to the case or cooler;
  • protective fluid against oxidation, corrosion, deposits, and foam.

ZF describes transmission oil as a design element and identifies lubrication, hydraulics, friction control, and torque transfer as central functions.1

What does it do in a manual transmission?

Manual-transmission fluid lubricates gears, shafts, bearings, and synchronizers and carries heat. The fluid’s friction behavior can affect synchronizer operation and shift quality.

Do not assume axle gear oil is correct for a manual gearbox. API GL-4 and GL-5 are service designations, while SAE viscosity and OEM requirements are separate.2

Why does the exact specification matter?

Transmission fluid is matched to clearances, pump design, valve response, clutch materials, seals, and temperature. A product can look and feel similar yet have the wrong friction curve or viscosity.

Ford warns that fluid outside the defined specification may reduce performance or cause component damage.3 Start with the vehicle manual and transmission code.

Which Inforca products cover common transmission types?

Inforca’s current portfolio includes:4

  • MANNOL Automatic Plus ATF Dexron III for listed older Dexron/Mercon-style applications;
  • MANNOL ATF Multivehicle JWS 3309 for listed Aisin Warner-related applications;
  • MANNOL ATF CVT for covered continuously variable transmissions;
  • PureGuard Multi-Purpose ATF, PG504;
  • PureGuard Full Synthetic Global ATF, PG505;
  • PureGuard SynGuard SAE 50, PG506, for selected heavy-duty powershift applications;
  • MANNOL and PureGuard gear oils for listed manual-transmission and axle applications.

Each is application-specific. Confirm the exact data sheet and availability.

What information identifies the correct fluid?

Provide year, make, model, VIN, engine, transmission code, transmission type, OEM fluid specification, current fluid, service procedure, quantity, and symptoms.

Do not identify the fluid by color. Dyes are not a universal specification.

Frequently asked questions

Is transmission fluid oil?

It is a formulated lubricant, but its functions and specifications differ from engine oil.

Does every car have transmission fluid?

Every geared transmission needs lubrication, but the fluid type and service access vary.

Can I use ATF in a manual transmission?

Only if the manufacturer specifies that ATF or covered standard.

Can low fluid damage a transmission?

Low level can reduce hydraulic pressure, lubrication, and cooling. Find and repair the leak.

Is lifetime fluid permanent?

No universal definition exists. Follow the manufacturer’s schedule and operating-condition guidance.

Confirm the transmission code

Send Inforca the VIN or transmission code, required specification, current fluid, service quantity, monthly volume, and package preference. The team can compare current MANNOL and PureGuard documentation.
